Trail Conditions

Actually from last night... but too tired to post after the ski.

Trails have been groomed wider, they are great to skate, you can now skate without touching the classic track.

REMINDER: High school race on Friday is looking to move to Cole's Woods, so we need to keep the trails in top shape.  Please do not walk on the trails, if you see anybody doing it please gently remind them not to walk on trails.  We want the kids to have an excellent course.

Thanks.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -10.7C
Rel. Humidity: 68%
Snow Height: 16cm
Snow Type: Powder
Weather: Floodlights!

We picked up another cm snow overnight.  Trails are groomed and a classic track is set.  For classic be careful there are some thin spots in the tracks, for skating no issues anywhere.  Lights are on in full force, just one small stretch at the end of Long Way is out.  Enjoy Cole's Woods in its full glory with groomed powder snow on a firm base.

PM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -7.4C
Rel. Humidity: 86%
Snow Height: 15cm
Snow Type: powder

It snowed all day from flurries to heavy squalls.  Should pick up a little bit more tonight.  Skiing should be good tomorrow with fresh snow on top of the older on top of panzer ice at the bottom.  Check back for trail reports tomorrow.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -17.6C
Rel. Humidity: 70%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: Thin powder with boilerplate ice underneath
Weather: clear and coooold

Back on my feet and skis.  The trails are actually nice for rock skis.  There is anywhere from 2mm to 2cm of powder snow on boilerplate hard ice, depending on whether it's under a lot or little tree cover, respectively.  Fortunately, all the downhills are on the more snow side so on slow rock skis, are all very doable.  Classic is recommended because there is debris under the powder or melded into the ice, so some areas it is definitely lurchy.  Obviously no tracks set in the hard ice, so lots of double poling, short diagonal strides, or herringbone only.  If you have sharpened rollerski poles, use those.  The ice was so hard, my regular snow baskets were slipping all over the place...

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -3.5C
Rel. Humidity: 82%
Snow Height: 10cm
Snow Type: dusting of powder on hardpack/ice
Weather: overcast

We picked up only a dusting of new snow last night, enough to make everything look great, but you don't know what's really underneath.  Conditions in Cole's Woods should be ok for rock skis.  Sorry, I am sick so can't go out and verify.

Best bet is, Lake George Elementry held the Queensbury Invitational races yesterday, and reports are the snow was good, so nice and groomed for skating there.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -0.3C
Rel. Humidity: 96%
Snow Height: 12cm
Snow Type: wet snow on ice
Weather: Snowfall

The light rain from last evening apparently turned to snow in the night, we've picked up over 1cm of new snow and it is still snowing.  This should be the end of the usual January Thaw -- this time it was particularly brutal, but we had a lot of snow to start compared to last year, so we didn't make it to bare ground as we did last year.  Just hope we don't have an additional unusual February Thaw like last year...  Should be able to rock ski today.  And with a bit more snow and we should be able to really ski again.

It rained all day...

Somehow we have 9cm of snow left in the yard and no bare patches yet, the ground is probably so saturated the snow had nowhere to go... haven't had a chance to look at the trails, but being under trees and having been groomed, most likely are no longer skiable.

At least the temps are dropping below freezing now, and the next few days there is a chance for a little snow every day.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -6.8C
Rel. Humidity: 73%
Snow Height: 20cm
Snow Type: Transformed
Weather: clear

Sorry for not being able to post, too much work lately.  We've had grooming reports coming in from the FOCW grooming crew, so the trails have been regroomed several times since the rain and refreeze, so icy spots should be broken up by now.  There is quite a bit of debris from the winds on Tue., at least in our yard so expect the same in Cole's Woods, so classic would be better than trying to skate.  Wish I could get out tonight but it is back to work...

PM Thaw Report

Air Temperature: 0C
Rel. Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 20cm
Snow Type: Mushy
Weather: Clearing

This morning woke up to ice everywhere.  Then we got up to +5C and pouring rain this morning.  Temperature has dropped and things are starting to refreeze, with most of the snow intact and compacted.  Please do not ski the trails until they are refrozen, otherwise there'll just be big ruts that won't come out.
