New Years Eve Area Trail Reports

Air Temperature; -9.1C
Relative Huidity: 87%
Snow Height: 16cm
Snow Type: light powder on corn or ice
Weather: light snowfall

Queensbury has nice wide skate grooming (no tracks set, relay this morning must have been skating only), the trails on the field are near perfect, in the woods is shortened (no hills), going in is pretty icy but coming out there are some long stretches of perfect wide skate lane!  It will only be better tomorrow after the light snowfall.

Cole's Woods has a nice classic track set, appears not regroomed but with the light snowfall and a solid base it should be nice tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -11.1C
Rel. Humidity: 73%
Snow Height: 16cm
Snow Type: Corn or icy hardpack
Weather: Floodlights

Trails were not regroomed, but were still decent and fast.  Some icy spots where the rain collected and refroze hard, but not many.  Icy hardpack on the downhills, with ungroomed corn to slow you down at the bottom.  There's a lot of sticks and tree pollen? and seedlings blown down from the storm yesterday, so the trails look worse than they are - it looks like a mess in some places, but nothing that'll scratch your skis.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -2C
Rel. humidity: 73%
Snow Height: 17cm
Snow Type: crunchy icy stuff
Weather: clearing

We got more snow but it must have later mixed with rain, so in the end the net was 5cm, but it is already compacted, so we should have nice corn snow conditions today.

PM Snow Report

Skated Queensbury School trails this afternoon, under mixed snow/rain, the workout ended early due to heavy rain.  But on the way home the rain turned to big falling chunks of snow and within a couple of hours we have over 5cm of new snow and it is still coming down hard.  Snow report in the AM and trail report in the PM.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -1.8C
Rel. Humidity: 87%
Snow Height: 12cm
Snow Type: Hardpack
Weather: Floodlights!

Cole's Woods has been nicely regroomed, it is nice and wide and very much skatable now.  There are a couple of patches where dirt has been dug up by the grooming, but it's not horrible to ski around.  Classic track is nice and firm.

Hope Sunday is more snow than rain before we dip into the next deep arctic attack.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -4C
Rel. Humidity: 77%
Snow Height: 15cm
Snow Type: powder on ice
Weather: slightly overcast

We picked up 4cm of fresh new snow yesterday.  Surface is powder, with ice underneath.  Crandall and Kensington are groomed, great for the little kids.  Add that to Cole's Woods and Queensbury being groomed and today is an excellent day to enjoy the powder surface, snow temperature won't get above freezing today :-)

Merry Christmas! Trail Report

Air Temperature: -13.1C
Rel. Humidity: 71%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: icy hardpack
Weather: Sunny

Area trails (thanks for the grooming yesterday! best xmas gift to all)
Cole's Woods - regroomed yesterday, full coverage with minimum icy spots, old classic track still usable, best bet in the area, have fun!
Queensbury - main trails in the woods are not usable, too many big icy patches where water collected and refroze boiler plate hard with skate ruts that'll land you on your butt if you are ever trying to really skate, however the field is groomed for skating and is a nice sugary 2.5km snaking route.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0.9C
Rel. Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: icy mush
Weather: Misty

Track set from Thurs. still usable.

Looks like we'll get out of this one alive.  This morning remained near freezing with ony a mild shower around noon.  Maximum temperature all day was 1.5C and it is now dropping. Trails had 100% cover, they weren't pretty but are skiable.  Recommend classic skiing until the trails are regroomed, since there are tons of divots from people who shouldn't be walking on the groomed trails, and some nice long skate ruts from people skating or herringboning on the mushy snow a couple of days ago.  Should be fun and icy tomorrow!

AM Thaw Report

Air Temperature:  0C
Rel . Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: Icy
Weather: Misty

So far so good.  The entire night stayed at or slightly below freezing!  Forecast is for some light rain and rising temperatures, but if we make it past today then it's a hard freeze and we keep what we have.  Heading out to check out the trails...

Sunday, December 22, 2013

PM Thaw Report

Temperature: -0.2C
Snow Height: 12cm

It looks like it wasn't as bad as the forecast.  It has stayed below freezing the entire day.  Only light rain to mist only.  Temperatures are still predicted to rise through the evening, but not as high as previously predicted and forecasted high keeps dropping or pushing out in time.  So cross your fingers.  Will post tomorrow AM how the trails look.

Thaw Report

Snow Height: 12cm

That's about all we need to know... not down to zero yet despite an entire night of rain.  We had freezing rain for the latter part of the night, there is ice everywhere.  Today will be the worst of it, up to 11C and raining most of the day.  I'll check out the trail tomorrow AM, look back for a report.

Again, no new grooming since packed snow will only lead to puddles and with the hard refreeze coming Tue. all we'll have is ice.  Hope is that the rain is absorbed in the current snow, the porous snow will then be groomable come Tuesday.

Thaw Report Day 2

Air Temperature: 1.3C
Relative Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 18cm
Weather: Overcast
Snow Type: Melting!

Day 2 of 3 of above zero and rain in the forcast.  Trails were groomed and track set on Thursday, there will be no additional grooming until we get through the thaw as the snow can absorb more rain without additional grooming, and thus hopefully hold up through the thaw.

AM Thaw/Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0.4C
Rel. Humidity: 87%
Snow Height: 25cm
Weather: Overcast

Trails are groomed and classic track is set.  Snow is of course soft.  Things held up well after the first day of thaw, but the real onslaught starts today with above freezing AND rain. Will report on trail conditions as this develops.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -11.2C
Rel. Humidity: 84%
Snow Height: 32cm
Weather: Light snowfall

After the snow had compacted to 25cm yesterday morning, it is now back up over 32cm.  Enjoy before the coming thaw later in the week.  Trail report later tonight.

830pm Trail Report

Air Temperature: -12.3C
Rel. Humidity: 70%
Weather: Clear
Snow Type: Powder

Groomed and classic track set. Light working well, except at 4-Corners.  We'll see if we can get those bulbs replaced with snow in place...

Very soft conditions, first grooming and good usage today made for tough skating with either the poles going very deep or the gliding ski hitting something.  Classic would be better until the trails firm up, which should happen after Thurs.

Let it Snow!

It was freezing cold this morning, -10C and didn't warm up much past -4C all day.  Flurries from last night had parts of the roof white, and if you look carefully you can see some snow in the grass below.  Let it snow, we are ready... the ski trails look good and ready for the season.  Thanks to the City of Glens Falls, The Friends of Cole's Woods, and everybody that has done trail work to get the trails ready for nordic skiing!

4PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: +4,5C
Relative Humidity: 49%
Weather: Overcast and windy
Snow Type: Wet
Snow Height: 15cm

Trails are groomed and tracked and have good snow cover, some thin spots in the usual problem areas, no issue skiing around these thin spots.  There is a lot of debris due to the high winds this morning. The snow is very slow, wait for tomorrow early AM when it's all frozen again to go fast.

8AM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -2C
Rel. Humidity:        77%
Weather:                 overcast
Snow Type:            transformed

Groomed and track set, have a great weekend of skiing!

8PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0,4C
Rel. Humidity:      88%
Weather:               snowfall
Snow Type:          wet
Snow Height:       30cm

We had up to 35cm before it started to compact this afternoon.  The trails have deep snow, are not groomed, but there is a solid human-set track around the whole set of trails.  They started to roll the trails at the Inside Edge parking lot, but didn't finish.  Maybe the trails will be groomed tomorrow.

7AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -2,8C

3PM Snow Report

Air Temperature: 0,9C
Rel. Humidity: 79%
Weather: flurries
Snow Type: powder
Snow Height: 4cm

We have had continuous light snowfall and flurries since last evening and all day today.  It's the type that sticks to snow, but isn't sticking where there wasn't snow.  Enjoy rock skiing the trails while you can today and tomorrow.  It will warm up after Tuesday and it looks like current prediction is we are not in the path of the major snowstorm coming around mid-next week.

Spring Report

Air Temperature: 2.6C
Rel. Humidity: 95%
Weather: Flurries
Snow Type: slush and puddles
Snow Height: 0-2cm

Trails are slush, puddles, or are bare.  It's been spring-like the last couple of weeks already.  It really feels like spring today.  At this point let's have it melt fast so we can start training for next season!

6PM Area Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0,3C
Rel. Humidity: 95%
Weather: snowing
Snow Type: wet
Snow Height: 8cm

Cole's Woods similar to yesterday, ungroomed but skiable with bare patches.

Queensbury School trails have excellent cover, ungroomed slow skating, tracks set by other skiiers on the old machine track, so good classic skiing.

Hope this snow doesn't melt too much and sets a good base for the snow coming on Tues. night, 12-20cm predicted as of now.

9AM Snow Report

Air Temperature:  0,8C
Rel. Humidity:       90%
Weather:                overcast
Snow Type:           wet

7PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0,3C
Rel. Humidity: 88%
Weather: Sleet
Snow Type: Wet
Snow Height: 7cm

Ungroomed, rock skis, skating recommended since the classic skis will ice.

We started to pick up wet snow around 11AM and it snowed quite well throughout the afternoon.  Trails are well covered except for the usual problem areas where there is too much shade from the trees.  Because the snow today would only stick to the old snow underneath, bare areas remained bare.  It is supposed to continue snowing tonight so let's see what we get tomorrow morning.

We are back, and so is the snow

Air Temperature: -3,2C
Rel. Humidity: 80%
Weather: flurries
Snow Type: wet snow
Snow Height: 4cm

Sorry for not posting last week, we were all sick.  Not much to report last week anyway, just our not-so-much-blizzard-snow melting away.  Pleasant surprise last evening, the rain and ice predicted turned out to be ice and snow.  So we have a nice thin blanket of wet heavy snow, on top of what was left in Cole's Woods from last week it should make for decent rock classic skiing today.

11AM Area Trail Report

Air Temperature: -7.8C
Rel. Humidity: 60%
Weather: Sunny
Snow Type: Powder
Snow Depth: 11cm

Enjoy the nice sunny day.

11AM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -1,7C
Rel. Humidity:        46%
Weather:                 sunny
Snow Type:            powder
Snow Height:         14cm

Entire 5km loop has been freshly rolled. Some but not all the connecter trails have also been rolled.  Not quite enough snow to groom.  Great day for slow touring or double pole strength training!

8AM Snow is back Report

Air Temperature: -8,8C
Rel. Humidity:        75%
Weather:                 overcast
Snow Type:            fresh powder

Air Temperature: -0,2C
Rel. Humidity:       81%
Weather:                cloudy
Snow Type:           wet powder
Snow Height:        9cm

Should be good rock skiing today, it will be only slightly above freezing with freezing rain coming first tonight.  We'll report back on Thursday after the big warm rainstorm comes through and see if anything is left.

10AM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -13.4C
Rel. Humidity:       62%
Weather:                sunny
Snow Type:           frozn mud/ice with 1cm powder on top
Snow Height:        4cm

We got about 1cm new snow last night, made everything look good, but things have not changed much on the trails.  Powder on mud/ice or bare ground.  It is ski-able with rock skis on the flats, some sections are nice, some sections expect to dodge pine cones and bare spots hiding under the powder.  Hills are pretty much no go.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

8AM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -13.4C
Rel. Humidity: 82%
Weather: Sunny
Snow Type: Powder on mix of frozen mud and ice
Snow Height: 5cm

The rain and sun on Sunday melted things almost to bare ground.  The snow last night made everything white again, but it was only about an inch worth at best.  Since it is staying cold, it's just enough on top of the frozen mix of ice and mud that you can rock ski the trails.  There's a lot of branches and pine cones that fell during Sunday's storms so again be careful.

No Snow Report

Sunday was not so kind to the trails. Grass was poking through the field by Inside Edge by afternoon. By this morning there is bare ground in the back yard. Sunday was brutal without sunshine, and today is almost as high in temperature and sunny. Pause in skiing for the moment, we need to have everything refreeze and new snow to fall. Hopefully there is some snow remaining so we don't have to start from scratch again to enjoy skiing in Cole's Woods. We'll post again when the snow comes back.

7PM Thaw Report

Air Temperature: 3.8C
Rel. Humidity: 96%
Weather: Fog
Snow Type: Slush
Snow Height: 10cm

Groomed but no tracks set

This morning went pretty well, the tracks in Crandall Park were still usable by the kids.  Cole's Woods trails held up pretty well with only a few bare spots to avoid, the entire loop is still well skiable, except the downhill down into the swamp.  Tomorrow early AM should still be okay, but with rain in the forecast, it will be hard going by afternoon.

Friday, January 11, 2013

After the Rain Trail Report

Trail has held up pretty good.  Tomorrow AM should still be a good skate on rock skis. More details tomorrow AM.
