New Years Eve Area Trail Reports

Air Temperature; -9.1C
Relative Huidity: 87%
Snow Height: 16cm
Snow Type: light powder on corn or ice
Weather: light snowfall

Queensbury has nice wide skate grooming (no tracks set, relay this morning must have been skating only), the trails on the field are near perfect, in the woods is shortened (no hills), going in is pretty icy but coming out there are some long stretches of perfect wide skate lane!  It will only be better tomorrow after the light snowfall.

Cole's Woods has a nice classic track set, appears not regroomed but with the light snowfall and a solid base it should be nice tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -11.1C
Rel. Humidity: 73%
Snow Height: 16cm
Snow Type: Corn or icy hardpack
Weather: Floodlights

Trails were not regroomed, but were still decent and fast.  Some icy spots where the rain collected and refroze hard, but not many.  Icy hardpack on the downhills, with ungroomed corn to slow you down at the bottom.  There's a lot of sticks and tree pollen? and seedlings blown down from the storm yesterday, so the trails look worse than they are - it looks like a mess in some places, but nothing that'll scratch your skis.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -2C
Rel. humidity: 73%
Snow Height: 17cm
Snow Type: crunchy icy stuff
Weather: clearing

We got more snow but it must have later mixed with rain, so in the end the net was 5cm, but it is already compacted, so we should have nice corn snow conditions today.

PM Snow Report

Skated Queensbury School trails this afternoon, under mixed snow/rain, the workout ended early due to heavy rain.  But on the way home the rain turned to big falling chunks of snow and within a couple of hours we have over 5cm of new snow and it is still coming down hard.  Snow report in the AM and trail report in the PM.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: -1.8C
Rel. Humidity: 87%
Snow Height: 12cm
Snow Type: Hardpack
Weather: Floodlights!

Cole's Woods has been nicely regroomed, it is nice and wide and very much skatable now.  There are a couple of patches where dirt has been dug up by the grooming, but it's not horrible to ski around.  Classic track is nice and firm.

Hope Sunday is more snow than rain before we dip into the next deep arctic attack.

AM Snow Report

Air Temperature: -4C
Rel. Humidity: 77%
Snow Height: 15cm
Snow Type: powder on ice
Weather: slightly overcast

We picked up 4cm of fresh new snow yesterday.  Surface is powder, with ice underneath.  Crandall and Kensington are groomed, great for the little kids.  Add that to Cole's Woods and Queensbury being groomed and today is an excellent day to enjoy the powder surface, snow temperature won't get above freezing today :-)

Merry Christmas! Trail Report

Air Temperature: -13.1C
Rel. Humidity: 71%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: icy hardpack
Weather: Sunny

Area trails (thanks for the grooming yesterday! best xmas gift to all)
Cole's Woods - regroomed yesterday, full coverage with minimum icy spots, old classic track still usable, best bet in the area, have fun!
Queensbury - main trails in the woods are not usable, too many big icy patches where water collected and refroze boiler plate hard with skate ruts that'll land you on your butt if you are ever trying to really skate, however the field is groomed for skating and is a nice sugary 2.5km snaking route.

PM Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0.9C
Rel. Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: icy mush
Weather: Misty

Track set from Thurs. still usable.

Looks like we'll get out of this one alive.  This morning remained near freezing with ony a mild shower around noon.  Maximum temperature all day was 1.5C and it is now dropping. Trails had 100% cover, they weren't pretty but are skiable.  Recommend classic skiing until the trails are regroomed, since there are tons of divots from people who shouldn't be walking on the groomed trails, and some nice long skate ruts from people skating or herringboning on the mushy snow a couple of days ago.  Should be fun and icy tomorrow!

AM Thaw Report

Air Temperature:  0C
Rel . Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 11cm
Snow Type: Icy
Weather: Misty

So far so good.  The entire night stayed at or slightly below freezing!  Forecast is for some light rain and rising temperatures, but if we make it past today then it's a hard freeze and we keep what we have.  Heading out to check out the trails...

PM Thaw Report

Temperature: -0.2C
Snow Height: 12cm

It looks like it wasn't as bad as the forecast.  It has stayed below freezing the entire day.  Only light rain to mist only.  Temperatures are still predicted to rise through the evening, but not as high as previously predicted and forecasted high keeps dropping or pushing out in time.  So cross your fingers.  Will post tomorrow AM how the trails look.

Thaw Report

Snow Height: 12cm

That's about all we need to know... not down to zero yet despite an entire night of rain.  We had freezing rain for the latter part of the night, there is ice everywhere.  Today will be the worst of it, up to 11C and raining most of the day.  I'll check out the trail tomorrow AM, look back for a report.

Again, no new grooming since packed snow will only lead to puddles and with the hard refreeze coming Tue. all we'll have is ice.  Hope is that the rain is absorbed in the current snow, the porous snow will then be groomable come Tuesday.

Thaw Report Day 2

Air Temperature: 1.3C
Relative Humidity: 93%
Snow Height: 18cm
Weather: Overcast
Snow Type: Melting!

Day 2 of 3 of above zero and rain in the forcast.  Trails were groomed and track set on Thursday, there will be no additional grooming until we get through the thaw as the snow can absorb more rain without additional grooming, and thus hopefully hold up through the thaw.

AM Thaw/Trail Report

Air Temperature: 0.4C
Rel. Humidity: 87%
Snow Height: 25cm
Weather: Overcast

Trails are groomed and classic track is set.  Snow is of course soft.  Things held up well after the first day of thaw, but the real onslaught starts today with above freezing AND rain. Will report on trail conditions as this develops.

Air Temperature: -11.2C
Rel. Humidity: 84%
Snow Height: 32cm
Weather: Light snowfall

After the snow had compacted to 25cm yesterday morning, it is now back up over 32cm.  Enjoy before the coming thaw later in the week.  Trail report later tonight.

830pm Trail Report

Air Temperature: -12.3C
Rel. Humidity: 70%
Weather: Clear
Snow Type: Powder

Groomed and classic track set. Light working well, except at 4-Corners.  We'll see if we can get those bulbs replaced with snow in place...

Very soft conditions, first grooming and good usage today made for tough skating with either the poles going very deep or the gliding ski hitting something.  Classic would be better until the trails firm up, which should happen after Thurs.
